Volume 4: The Dimensions of Spirit

Workbook 39.1: Rubber Sheet Geometry

Directives for the Topologist:

1. Think Flexible: Shapes are made of infinitely stretchy rubber.
2. No Tears: You can't cut or rip the rubber.
3. No Glue: You can't stick two separate parts together.
4. Identify Homeomorphs: Two shapes are "the same" if you can morph one into the other.

Part I: Topological Twins

For each pair of shapes, decide if they are **Homeomorphic** (the same) or **Different**.

A Circle and a Square.

Answer: **Homeomorphic**.
Reason: You can stretch the circle to have four corners without ripping it.

A Piece of String and a Rubber Band (Loop).

...

The Letter 'O' and the Letter 'D'.

...

A Solid Clay Ball and a Flat Clay Pancake.

...

Part II: Identifying the Invariants

Which property is preserved under continuous stretching? Write "Preserved" or "Changed."

The length of a side.

**Changed**.

The number of corners.

...

The number of separate pieces (Connectedness).

...

The existence of a hole through the middle.

...
The Koinonia Check:

If you have a group of 10 people holding hands in a circle, and they all step back 20 feet, has the Topology of the group changed? Has the Geometry changed? Explain why the distance between us doesn't break the unity of the Body.

Part III: Neighborhood Mapping

Draw three dots on a sheet of paper: A, B, and C. Draw a line from A to B.
1. Is B in the 'Neighborhood' of A?
2. Is C in the 'Neighborhood' of A?
3. What would you have to do to bring C into the neighborhood?

...

Part IV: The Challenge (The Mobius Twist)

The One-Sided Path

Take a strip of paper. Twist it once and glue the ends together. You have created a Mobius Strip.
Task: Is a Mobius Strip homeomorphic to a standard paper loop (no twist)?
Hint: Can you "Un-twist" it without un-gluing the ends?

...

Part V: Transmission (The Echad Extension)

Teacher Log: The Playdough Morph

Objective: Explain Topology to a younger sibling using playdough.

The Activity:
1. Make a ball of dough.
2. Squash it flat into a coin.
3. Ask: "Is it still the same dough?"
4. "Yes! Stretching and squashing doesn't change who we are."

The Lesson: "God made us to be flexible. we can change how we look on the outside, but we stay the same inside as long as we don't let our hearts be ripped apart."
